California

The snow keeps coming. I need to get more skiing in.

We went to CA last week and took the kids to Disney Land. Kim and I planned a team effort on an off-road duathlon the next day, but we were too tired after the trip down and walking around all day and night with no food. Actually, Kim ate, but I didn't. I don't like snack foods much, and I couldn't bring myself to pay the in-park premium for unhealthy "food".

On the way there we stopped in St. George and I managed 2.5 hours of fine riding. I crossed paths with exactly one other couple the entire ride -- the Buzzards. The trip from St. George to Burbank was delayed by a bus that crashed into a barrier, tipped over, and burst into flames (no fatalities).

Disney was super-fun for the kids, and instead of the race I rode a couple hours near the in-laws' house on a steep single-track that was too crowded with hikers for bikes, and then a well-groomed fire road. The riding was so-so, but the weather was really great. I was planning some big hours for Monday morning, but it was raining so I installed a wireless router for Kim's parents instead.

The area could have some great biking if trails were constructed. The hills are generally steep (which is probably why they aren't covered with houses), so it would take a lot of labor. I haven't any idea if the most of the hills are public or privately owned. The crowds are an issue. I really like the alternating days approach used in Mill Creek and City Creek -- it works well.

I flew back for work while Kim stayed a few extra days. My flight was delayed by the 18" of snow waiting on the driveway when we got back.
