Idaho Continental Divide
Snowbird was one of those days that just doesn't go right. Busy with work, I have not been training much, and somehow that takes the mental edge off for me. I started fine, but just could not muster any real interest in the whole thing. Ned did not show up -- guess he was scared off by the rain, although, the rain actually made the riding pretty nice. The trail was good and, while cool, it was not cold.
End of the second lap I caught Reed Wycoff who had passed me along with almost everyone else late in the 1st lap, and we chatted a bit. I finally said, "Well, see ya." and pulled off. A minute later he came rolling back down, also calling it quits for the day.
Last week I spent the 4th in Island Park, ID. My grandad built a cabin there 30 years ago, and my parent now own it. I did an interesting ride from the cabin on the Continental Divide. Looking at the map (which would have benefited from more detail), I thought it would take 2-3 hours, but it actually took 6. I did get lost, which added over an hour, but most of the added time was due to bumpy, slow riding. The trail was well planned, but apparently sees almost no use. I saw absolutely no one for the middle five hours of the ride, and would guess I was the first bike and likely the first person to do the route this year.
People in Idaho have fond feelings for those of us who live to the south.
Where I grew up, Idaho is largely dry and flat. The blue sky wraps itself around you in a way that I just did not appreciate until I moved away. It is always nice going back.
