The season is coming ... the season is coming ...

And oh, there it goes???

The first half of the Intermountain Cup is over, or at least it will be when half way point of the race Saturday passes. So far I've finished ... 1 race? Bust.

I haven't felt right since the deer last summer, but I'm getting close. The shoulder isn't the issue any more - just training.

Fortuntely this part of the season has been according to plan, and rather than discouraging like it would otherwise be, it has just been what it has been. I've been more focused on work and the kids, watching the twins go from newborn to baby. They grow week by week. I think if I grew like they do, I could recover from any training effort overnight.

I felt pretty good at the Corner Canyon race Saturday, but I made a piloting mistake coupled with a seatbolt that I had broken, then replaced with a scrounge and forgotten about, that resulted in a crash and a broken seatpost clamp. Race over. I got it fixed and did a fun lap only to break my chain. Day over and back to the BBQ.

This past Saturday I did a long ride in Corner Canyon with Reed and still felt good at the end. I came home and told Kim I was starting to feel like an athlete again.

Honestly, my legs are a little cooked today, but all in good training I hope.

When pressed for time, I often think of the interval craze that has taken over the internet. Fit in 6 hours a week or whatever. I guess that works for some people, but not me. When I'm feeling good, I've usually had several consecutive weeks of 10-15 hrs and a gradual build in intensity, plenty of sleep, and a decent diet. When I do nothing but intervals and low volume, unless it is part of a taper after the afore mentioned plan, I just end up fried, slow, and unhappy.

At this point I'm ready for the season to start - a few months late to the party and perhaps pretty far behind at this point, but ready to enjoy the racing again.

I am with you on the needing/preferring high volume weeks. I think those quick fit plans are for people who don't like to do what they are doing. Really, how enjoyable are intervals? I would much rather be out on my bike for longer periods of time because I enjoy it. It is part of who I am and keeps me sane.
It is good to have you back on the circuit.
